The Boothbay Register - Online Edition

Jun 26, 2008 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 131, Number 26

Ocean Point

Pat Waldman

Columnist

We are preparing to enjoy Windjammer Days for the next two days with friends and family. It is now "foggy as pea soup," but we knew when the 567-foot Navy vessel entered into these waters. It had a deep whistle blowing incessantly, deeper than my grandpa's bass voice. That warning was certainly needed, considering their size!

Recently we saw sunny silver streaks and spots in the water out off the ledges between Linekin Neck and Boothbay Harbor. As we pondered, we realized there were huge schools of mackerel and several hungry seals leaping clear out of the water, savoring the experience of the bountiful breakfast.

The Ocean Point Marina recently reported a possible dead seal off their docks. DMR headquarters for mammal sightings and rescue called me to evaluate the situation. It was hard to identify from a distance, but a kind gentleman named Roger offered me his binoculars and a better vantage point from his sailboat, the Zephyr from N.H. The marina personnel were also very helpful, lending us a gaff, use of a dingy and spray paint to mark the body.

When my nephew and I got to the three- to four-foot baby seal floating in seaweed near the shore, we saw that there was no head attached, which explained the strange configuration. We sprayed the body with blue spots, to identify it for DMR as an assessed seal death.

Unfortunately, DMR does not have enough staff to pick up and dispose of the dead bodies this year, nor does the town have a dumping area for marine animals. I guess even a small whale would be a daunting task! The coastal communities still need a solution to eliminate rotting seal carcasses washing up and remaining on the shore.
