The standoff between former teacher Fred Lewis and the
Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District school committee
finally came to an end at the committee's Wednesday, June 11 meeting.
Committee Chairman Larry Colcord stated that he and committee member Alex
Logan had met with Lewis. As a result of that meeting, Colcord read a
statement in which he apologized for the comments he made during the
February 27 committee meeting that were perceived to be derogatory towards
Mr. Lewis. Lewis responded that this apology was sufficient to put the
matter to rest.
Jeanne Tonon presented the committee with two $1,000 awards and plaques
that the school had received for the coordinated school nutrition/health
program and for excellence in family and community involvement. Tonon
acknowledged the work of Darlene French, Food Service Director, Anne
Barker, School Health Center Director, and Lauren Brown, BRES physical
education teacher, in achieving the first award. Tonon said that the
$1,000 grant would be used to support next year's Harvest Lunch and the
school greenhouse project. The second grant will be used to send students
to an asset development conference in Minnesota next fall. Superintendent
Eileen King praised Tonon for doing the lion's share of the work on these
two grants and said that Tonon deserved an outstanding leadership award
for her efforts.
Resignations, retirements
Colcord announced that second grade teacher Renee Miller had resigned
after four years of teaching at BRES to take a position in the Windham
school district. Brooke Barter is also retiring as BRES field hockey
coach. Colcord said that the committee appreciated the contributions of
both women and wished them luck. King said after the meeting that Miller's
position would be filled, but due to enrollment shifts, a kindergarten
teacher would be hired instead.
Colcord read a letter of thanks from the committee to retiring BRHS
Principal Jack Tourtillotte for his many years of service to the students
and the community.
Tourtillotte said that he was excited to report that Dan Wolotsky, the
new BRHS library media specialist, and Steve Calande, the new BRHS
physical education/health instructor and head football coach, had both
recently been in town visiting the school and area.
BRES Principal Mark Tess summarized concluding events for the school
year, including the eighth grade recognition ceremony, the last trimester
middle school assembly, and the seventh grade class trip to Salem. Tess
thanked the school board for their support throughout the year.
Tourtillotte congratulated the BRHS girls' tennis team for being the
Mountain Valley Conference Champions. He also reported that Matt Forgues
and Zach Campbell were state champions in track. Tourtillotte said that
this year's graduation was terrific and that the project graduation trip
was one of the best in years.
Trish Harrison, Special Education Director, reported that new referrals
to the special education program were up significantly for next year.
King reported that the CSD was finishing with a strong financial year.
She said that revenues were greater than anticipated, and that this
surplus will be carried over to next year's budget cycle
King outlined the Alternative Organization Structure (AOS) being
considered for the local school consolidation plan. She announced that a
team of individuals from Union 49 and Union 74 will travel to Bar Harbor
to learn about the AOS used in that school district.
Lunch prices will be going up in the fall. BRES breakfast will go from
75 cents to a dollar, lunch from $1.75 to $2. BRHS breakfast will go from
$1 to $1.25 and lunch will stay at $2.25.
BRHS student Morgan Mitchell will be next year's student representative
to the school committee. Larry Colcord was re-elected as chair of the
school committee and Alex Logan was elected as vice chair.
No summer meetings of the school committee have been scheduled. The
first meeting of the next school year is scheduled for August 27.
