The state of Maine's "preferred" Route 1 bypass - or, perhaps more than one - will be named at a meeting of the Midcoast Bypass Task Force Tuesday, June 10.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at the Edgecomb Eddy School on Route 27 in Edgecomb. The meeting is open to the public

For most people in Wiscasset, including the selectmen, none of the proposed routes are acceptable, based on a referendum vote by the people and a vote by the selectmen, because all the routes are too short and come too close to the historic village.

People in Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor, north of Wiscasset, would love to see a bypass built, and generally don't care where it goes, as long as it gets built. Estimates for the proposed routes, which all start near the NAPA auto parts store just south of Wiscasset village, and come out either on Davis Island or the mainland in Edgecomb, range from $36 to $45 million for about three miles of roadway.

The Maine Department of Transportation estimates that as many as 33 homes and 15 businesses may be displaced. Wiscasset Town Manager Arthur Faucher has asked the state to conduct an economic impact study on the what this will mean in lost tax revenue and jobs.

Whose property will be affected by the proposed bypass routes? In December of 2007 the state released this list of property owners who will be "potentially displaced" if one of the five routes is selected:
