Columnist

Hello again. On March 11 at approximately 10:30 a.m. at the regular Tuesday morning meeting at the Y, President Faith Meyer opened the meeting, but not as usual. (See, I keep telling you that every week is different and interesting.) The reason it was not "as usual" was because the program of the day was to be presented by the children of the Southport Central School, and all 30 plus of them just got off the bus and were beginning to come in. So they were there for the opening (where we recognized those members who had birthdays, treasurer's report, announcements, etc.), and as usual, Viv Daniels led us in singing. The songs we sang were "old" before the children were born. (Most of the songs we sang were old even before WE were born.) Following the salute to the flag (the children heartily joining in), Chaplain Mary Jo Zimmerli told a very meaningful children's story - that the children really related to.

The president introduced Barbara Prose, the teacher and leader of the group, who in turn told about the music program to be presented, and all of the children involved.

The opening number was "The Southport Central School Song," written for the school some years ago, and sung by all the children. Then, each class sang a song or two beginning with Kindergarten and first graders with "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," and a classic American folk song - "Oats, Peas, Beans, and Barley Grow."

Then grades two and three sang two Native American songs, one being "Land of the Silver Birch," which was followed by grades four and five who sang and acted out "Waltzing Matilda," then sang "Sunny Side of the Street" and "Keeping on the Sunny Side." Then several members from grade six sang a song from a poem written by Robert Lewis Stevenson, and a lovely song sung in Swedish. Two songs sung together were "Peace, Salaam, Shalom" and the entire group closed with "I am a Small Part of the World" and "We Can Make a Difference."

Mrs. Prose accompanied the group on the piano and guitar, and percussionists Jack Hasch, Collin Thomson and Sherman Brewer did a great job on several of the pieces.

After a standing ovation, President Meyers presented the school with two books, one of the Dr. Seuss books, and the book about André the famous seal of Rockport. We all then had lunch with the performers joining us and enjoying lots of Easter candy and goodies for dessert.

Well, once again a wonderful time together; come on by and join us at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Y for an informative and interesting program and time of fellowship.
