Legislature recognizes Al Sherman
Rep. Bruce MacDonald, D-Boothbay, submitted a special legislative sentiment this week to recognize Alfred B. "Al" Sherman, of Boothbay, who was honored by the Bureau of Maine Veterans' Services with the Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medal for his service in the Marines and for his award of the Purple Heart for injuries received during World War II.
At a ceremony in Augusta in March, Sherman received a certificate of appreciation from the citizens of Maine, which was signed by Gov. John E. Baldacci and Major General John Libby, Adjutant General of the Maine National Guard.
Sherman joined the United States Marines in 1942 and he fought with the 4th Marine Division on Iwo Jima, Saipan, Tinian and Roi-Namur as a gunnery sergeant. He was wounded five times and received three Purple Heart commendations.
The sentiment read in part, "We acknowledge Mr. Sherman's extraordinary bravery, his sacrifices and his accomplishments during World War II, and we extend our appreciation to him for his dedicated service to his State and to the Nation." |
