FAETURE:Letters
Dear Editor:
The Boothbay Region Land Trust on Saturday, February 9, held an open
house under sunny skies and newly-fallen snow in the woods of Ovens Mouth
Preserve. The land trust hoped to demonstrate that logging, carefully
done, does not unduly interfere with public use of its preserves.
Special thanks go to Tony Finocchiaro who brought his portable saw
mill and demonstrated its uses; to Calvin (Rod) Cooper and his team of
horses who showed us how our forebears hauled logs out of the forest; and
land trust board member Jim Dun how to split fire- wood with a power wood
splitter.
Special thanks also to logger Lance Chadwick. In my forty years of
forestry work I have never met a better logger than Lance. If anyone in
the area has needs of a careful logger, here he is.
And finally our friends, of which neighbors Kerrin and Linc Erhard are
just one example, who made the day enjoyable for all.
The 70 or so people attending the forest demonstration, including a
group of local boy scouts, enjoyed pork and beans cooked over an open
fire, hot dogs and marshmallows, hot mulled apple cider, baked goodies,
sleigh rides provided by the horses of Rod Cooper, operation of the saw
mill by Tony Finocchiaro, and more.
Boothbay Region Land Trust preserves open space and wildlife habitats
on the Boothbay peninsula, demonstrates sound forest management, protects
and provides working waterfront and serves the interests of year-round
residents and summer visitors.
