The Boothbay Register - Online Edition

Feb 07, 2008 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 131, Number 6

Ocean Point

Columnist

I do not remember a winter that has thrown so many diverse weather conditions at us, and now I hear that the all-knowing groundhog has seen his shadow on February 2nd. For those that believe in his wisdom, that means six more weeks of winter!

The ground here is currently bare and the sun is pouring in, but rain is reported to be moving our way up from the south.

These ever-changing conditions really confuse our wildlife. Sightings reported around Ocean Point include: 13 fat robins, a cardinal, and three huge crows; a barred owl; and three fat turkeys, a piliated and a downy woodpecker; and a pure white squirrel-like animal scampering over a stone wall in a field. The latter animal was interesting enough to prompt the turkeys to stroll over for a closer look and for my friend to take out binoculars to watch the interaction. It is interesting and exciting for many of us to have the privilege of such close contact with the natural world.

We took our annual journey up to Sangerville (near Moosehead) during the recent snow and sleet storm. As we left, the iceboat gliding along on Adams Pond brought back fond memories of many iceboat sightings in the past. Our friends' driveway had ten-foot drifts plowed along the edges, and treacherous glare ice under our feet and tires. They had seen tracks of a large coyote pack in their woods, so we kept a close watch on our two little dogs whenever they went out to struggle through the up-to-the-chin deep snow. Not all "canine cousins" are friendly!

We always go up there to enjoy the "Homemade Jam" session at the East Sangerville Grange Hall. The show includes warm-hearted humor and tall tales, foot-tapping rhythmic music, friendly neighbors, fresh baked desserts, and hot coffee or tea. The experience evokes more memories of times past, when entertainment was of a simpler nature and more fun. A welcome side effect of that evening was that my spirited foot tapping snapped one of my injured knees loudly back into place.

Upon returning to Boothbay, we were delighted to find out that the hometown hoedown here at the Opera House will be on this coming weekend, providing another chance for all of us to enjoy another round of local quality entertainment! Maybe I can adjust the other bad knee! Hop in your car and come up to join us for the fun!
