YMCA reaches Annual Fund campaign goal
For Andy Hamblett, it's a feeling that never gets old.
The Executive Director of the Boothbay Region YMCA is always thrilled when the YMCA's Annual Fund Drive tops its stated goal.
"For us to announce a fund drive year after year isn't the amazing part," said Hamblett. "What gives me extreme satisfaction is the fact that our communities are there to support us, without fail, time after time."
He's also quick to point out that though the campaign is an annual event, the process is by no means repetitious. Each campaign brings with it new ideas, fresh approaches and new leadership. The 2007 campaign, themed "Mission Possible," was no exception.
Fund Drive co-chairs Roy Lewis and John "Bud" Shevenell proved up to the task, overseeing a process that began last July. Through many hours and countless letters, nearly all of which included a personal note of some sort, the drive culminated a few weeks ago, topping off at $251,562.
"The total dollars we raised stand alone as evidence that our communities cherish the services and programs that we provide," said Hamblett. "Put that in perspective, factor in the economic struggles our country's going through, and you're left with powerful proof that the YMCA is a vital part of our daily lives here on this peninsula."
The drive's dollars will go a long way to ensuring that the YMCA's rates, already some of the lowest in the state, continue to stay as low as possible.
"We pride ourselves on not turning anyone away," explained Hamblett. "From our board down to our staff, accessibility to our services remains a tenet we hold firm."
Take the YMCA Dolphins swim team as just one example of the dollars at work. Seven swimmers are on full scholarship, not to mention others on partial assistance. Removing that funding puts the program's existence in peril.
Reaching our goal allows our mission to continue," Hamblett said. "We love seeing our parking lot full seven days a week. Our local communities have proven how much they can give, and our programs, classes, and facilities are our way of giving back. The communities' continued generosity and support help ensure the Y meets everyone's needs." |
