Salt and sand: Do towns have enough?

Lisa Kristoff

Staff Reporter

With snow, sleet and other wondrous winter weather falling upon us, seemingly every other day, one might pause and wonder, in-between shovels of the crystallized white stuff at the end of the driveway, how are the towns doing with road supplies?

Turns out Boothbay Town Manager John Anderson and Boothbay Public Works Foreman Tony Goode were wondering the very same thing after all of the December storms.

"We received another delivery of salt and sand in late December that is delivered as we need it by Reny," said Goode.

Goode said that Boothbay residents can still pick up two, five-gallon buckets of sand pre-mixed with salt if they haven't already.

The town garage is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

In Boothbay Harbor, the public works department has been out in force. Town Manager Tom Woodin said he and Public Works Foreman Jody Lewis sat down and discussed worst-case scenarios.

"We have enough resources in the budget to cover what is needed," said Woodin. "We have had to double our snow budget because at this point we have already used up our original budget.

"If storms keep coming as they have been, and over weekends and holidays, Jody and I decided it would be best to increase the budgeted amount to be prepared for whatever the next wave will be."

Southport's new public works crewmember, Ben Morse reports similar low sand and salt supplies - but the plowing will continue!

And, in Edgecomb, the entrance to our peninsula, the story is the same - more sand and salt had to be ordered.

Road Commissioner Scott Griffin said the town was "…quite a ways into the stock pile" and that more supplies were ordered.

"Hopefully," he added, "we will get it soon. We have already had as much snow as we have in a year."

Griffin and three others plow an estimated 31 miles of road in Edgecomb.

So, with the salt pile full and the public works crews having a little down time from the plows, we will all sit back and see what Mother Nature has in store. And, from all reports, we won't be waiting too long…
