The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor Applies for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)

The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor has begun the task of addressing the many capital improvements necessary to the preservation of this historic building. The Opera House is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to the presentation of quality programs and the preservation of an historic building for the enrichment of the community. The Opera House operates through the generous contributions received from individuals, foundations, and grant awards.

Currently, the Opera House is applying for funding support from the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development through the Public Facilities Grant that is part of the Community Development Block Grant program.

This grant would assist the Opera House with the installation of a new roof. Presently, the existing roof is in a state of decay that is failing to prevent water from seeping into the building and traveling to the finished floors below. Protecting this historic building from the elements is of the utmost priority and the Board of Directors along with the volunteers and the staff at the Opera House are hopeful in the approval of this grant which will enable the work to commence in the warmer months of this year.

The Opera House takes pride in its role as a community performing arts center that offers quality entertainment at affordable ticket prices along with several community events through out the year that are free of charge. The Opera House plays a significant role as a catalyst in stimulating economic development; the venue is a destination for visitors that creates a multiplier effect in bringing dollars to the area. The Opera House also helps significantly in keeping local dollars circulating in the community by offering patrons an opportunity to spend money on a cultural event in Boothbay Harbor rather than travel to Portland or Boston.

A public hearing is schedule on Monday, January 14, at 7 p.m. at the Boothbay Harbor Town Office. The public is invited to turn out and show its support for the roofing project that will help to protect and beautify the Opera House.
