Breaking news: The 2008 OP Golf season officially started on Wednesday,
January 2. Standing in a foot of snow, and with the temperature in the
teens, Lanny Whitehouse and Link Brown stood in front of the Happy Clam
Cottage, with permission granted by the owners, (Dale and Randi
Watch-owski) and using a three iron, hit a bucket of balls toward Green
Island. No, not one ball reached the island, but a grand time was had by
all. With a smile on his face, Lanny noted that Link's slice was just as
good as ever!
The ground was covered with snow that fell on New Year's Eve and New
Year's Day, and more is expected by Wednesday. The temperature has gone
from single digits to comfortable enough to take brisk walks and to take
down the outside Christmas lights. It took us four hours of slipping into
snow banks to return from Minot on Penguin Plunge Day, with the
great-grand-children in tow.
Our grandson Adam is moving back to Maine after receiving a promotion
from Idexx, so we kept the youngsters for a few days while their parents
were house hunting. I had forgotten how well two young children entertain
themselves using everything of mine in the house.
When we got home the power went out for about three hours. I cooked
supper on the gas stove by dim candlelight, while our daughter-in-law,
NaMi, kept the children calm by reading them books. My husband and son
were stretched out on the living room rug, looking at the Philippines on
the Atlas, as JB and NaMi left Monday to give an 11-day swim camp over
there. All this was done by candlelight. The generator door was blocked
by too much snow, to be accessible without late night shoveling. The wood
stoves were toasty warm, so the only inconvenience was that the well pump
shut off.
The brave individuals who had braved the storm to take the Plunge
representing Ocean Point peninsula were Allen Johnson, Larry Brown, Chip
Griffin, Andy and Lincoln Hamblett, according to an eyewitness. Watch for
a more complete report elsewhere in this issue.
We had a call from Jim Duncan. He is keeping up with all the winter
news via the Register and sends New Year greetings to all who remember
him.
Pat Farrin is reported to be progressing well after his surgery. Now
the trick will be to keep him following the doctor's orders for rest and
recuperation, as he wants to return to work as soon as possible. Knowing
Pat, I think there is a difference of opinion as to when that should
be!
I have begun to receive calls for addresses and phone numbers of
available cottages, and for the chapel reservations. Sue Taylor is
handling the chapel scheduling, and I can only help the renters if they
know where they want to stay. Sue's number is (207) 729-3675, if you need
to get in touch with her.
