Spruce Point Inn to again host Environmental Writers' Conference
The fifth Environmental Writers' Conference in honor of Rachel Carson
will be held at the Spruce Point Inn in Boothbay Harbor from June 10 to
13, 2008.
The keynote address will be delivered by Verlyn Klinkerborg, the author
of "Making Hay," "The Last Fine Time," "The Rural Life," and "Timothy: Or,
Notes of an Abject Reptile." His work has appeared in many magazines and
he has been a member of the editorial board of The New York Times since
1997.
Other featured speakers will include environmental historian and
award-winning biographer, Linda Lear, poet Alison Hawthorne Deming,
authors John Elder and David Gessner, and editor-in-residence, Jennifer
Sahn, from Orion magazine, winner of the 2004 Independent Press Award for
General Excellence. The program will also include an exhibit of Howard
Frech pen and ink sketches offered by Rachel Carson scolar, John Juriga,
as well as writing workshops and presentations by area writers and
artists.
In addition, there will be outdoor activities, including hikes led by
guides from the Boothbay Region Land Trust; a tour of the Coastal Maine
Botanical Gardens; marine explorations with a biologist from Bigelow
Laboratory for Ocean Sciences; and a trip to the Burnt Island
Lighthouse.
