Friends of the Harbor Theatre announces winter film series

Friends of the Harbor Theatre is presenting a new winter film series called "Wednesday Night at the Movies," with an exciting line-up of foreign films, award-winning features and documentaries, in six special mid-week viewings from January through April.

On December 14 at the Friends of the Harbor Theatre Board of Directors meeting, Helen Meserve, Friends' artistic director, announced the schedule.

"I'm excited and pleased at the response from those who took time to answer our film series survey," said Meserve. "I believe we will be showing a good cross section of requested subjects."

The six-part film series kicks off Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Harbor Theatre with the showing of "Bella," the winner of the 2007 Toronto Film Festival People's Choice Award. A special highlight of the evening will be a post-screening discussion with the film's associate producer Ryan Wolfington, who is coming from California for the event.

The remaining films are set for February 13 and 27, March 19, April 9 and 23. Film titles include: "In the Shadow of the Moon," a look back at the moon landing with special NASA film footage and interviews with astronauts; "The Jane Austen Book Club," with Maria Bello, Emily Blunt and Kathy Baker; "Moliere," a French costume drama set in the 16 th century (reminiscent of "Shakespeare in Love"); and Rick Ray in his award-winning interview, "10 Questions for the Dalai Lama," which includes footage of his travels in India and Nepal.

"We chose these films based on viewers' surveys taken over the last four months," said Meserve. "We wanted to offer something different from what you would see on the weekend, or at a multiplex elsewhere."

If this film series is successful, the Friends of the Harbor Theatre plans to offer another group of films in the fall, as well as two special events focusing on Boothbay Harbor and its relation to the sea this summer.

The subscription-only series will be six films for the single price of $50 per person for members, $60 for non-members.

For more information and a description of the films, pick up a copy of the reservation form in the theatre lobby or send an email to HarborFriends@aol.com for a downloadable form. Deadline for reservations is January 5, 2008.
