Marion C. Chubbuck

Marion C. Chubbuck, 93, of Woolwich, died Friday, November 30, at a local hospital with her loving family by her side.

Born at home in Woolwich on January 8, 1914, she was the daughter of Jesse M. and Auta Russell Munsey. She attended local schools.

On February 5, 1929 she married Harvey H. Chubbuck in Wiscasset.

Mrs. Chubbuck was an avid collector of plates, mustache cups, dishes, and a collection of pigs that totaled over 3,000. She enjoyed sewing, making quilts, and always made the best apple pies and yeast rolls.

Mrs. Chubbuck worked as a cook at the New Meadows restaurant of over ten years, the Bounty as a breakfast cook for more than 20 years, and a short stint at Larry's Market until she was fired because she wouldn't sell beer.

She was a member of the Woolwich Grange for over 55 years where she served many terms as Grand Master and Chaplain and was also a member of the National Grange.

She was predeceased by her husband on May 1, 1985; a son, Harvey G. Munsey; a daughter, Blanche Auta "Tootsie" Munsey; two brothers, David and James Munsey; three sisters, Hazel Munsey, Nancy Spinney, and Laura Main.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia L. and her husband Keith Bridgham of Wiscasset, Jacqueline H. and her husband Raymond E. Durgan of Popham Beach, and Susan N. and her husband Edward Ackerman of South Carolina; three sons, Kenneth T. and his wife Rita Chubbuck of Norridgewock, Jesse M. and his wife Barbara J. Chubbuck of Nobleboro, and Peter C. and his wife Donna M. Chubbuck of Woolwich; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elaine Mitchell of Bath, and Geraldine Hinckley of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home in Bath on Wednesday, December 5. Burial will be in the spring at Grover Cemetery in Woolwich.

Marjorie M. DeWick

Marjorie MacKinnon DeWick, 93, Woolwich, died Saturday, December 1, at the Freeport Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.

Born in Utica, N.Y. on November 18, 1914, she was the daughter of Rev. Norman and Abbie Etta MacKinnon. Raised in Topsham, she was the youngest of two brothers and three sisters. She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1932. In 1937 she graduated from the University of Maine. She was a Phi Beta Kappa and an All Maine Woman.

Mrs. DeWick married her high school sweetheart, Robert E. DeWick, on October 16, 1947 in St. Louis, Mo. Following World War II, they moved to the family farm on Phipps Point in Woolwich. After her husband's retirement, they traveled extensively making frequent visits to the Isle of Skye, Great Britain and Florence.

Mrs. DeWick was active in the Woolwich Historical Society and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Bath. She enjoyed cookouts at the farm and especially reading the New Yorker magazine. She was an avid birdwatcher and enjoyed many of the wild plants and flowers.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen C. DeWick of Woolwich, and Michael N. DeWick of Ashburnham, Mass.; and a daughter, Deborah DeWick Lloyd of Cambridge, England; two granddaughters, Catherine DeWick Johnson and Amanda N. Dewick; four grandsons, Jonathan C. DeWick, Daniel F. Lapham, Toby Phips Lloyd and Michael R.E. DeWick; and six great-grandchildren,

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath, ME. Funeral service will be private.

Alice L. Fletcher

Alice L. Fletcher, 76, of Presque Isle, wife of the late Avon Fletcher, passed away Wednesday, Nov 28, at a Presque Isle healthcare facility after a brief battle with recurring cancer.

Born November 10, 1931, at Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Dighton and the late Eithel Harmon (Dighton).

Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher owned and operated several businesses in Mars Hill. She also was employed at McCain Foods and the Mid-Town Motel.

Mrs. Fletcher was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church in Presque Isle where she made many close friends and thoroughly enjoyed working with the younger children.

Besides her husband of 39 years, she was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, John and Bill Dighton; and two sisters, Mary Pitcher and Edna Dillon.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Anderson and her husband Charles of Bangor and Patti Hopkinson and her husband Peter of Williamstown, N.Y.; one son, Robert Fletcher of Presque Isle; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Jarred, Lindsay, Caleb, Kelley, Stephanie and Matthew; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ella Kinney, Dorothy Murphy, Patricia Holmes; four brothers, Robert Dighton, Ernest Dighton, Earl Dighton and David Pennington; many nieces, nephews and relatives and special friends.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 1, at the Duncan Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle with The Rev. James Ackerson officiating. Interment was in Kings Grove Cemetery, Mars Hill.

James W. Hand Jr.

James W. Hand, Jr., 95, died at his home in Edgecomb on October 16. Mr. Hand had been a resident of Edgecomb since 1972.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he was the son of James Wallace Hand and Grace (Mooney) Hand.

Mr. Hand graduated from Pingry School, Elizabeth, N.J. in 1930, and from Bowdoin College in 1934. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Medical Service in Italy and North Africa. He was employed from 1935 to 1972 by Standard Oil Company (now Exxon-Mobil) as a research chemist.

In 1945 he married Grace Campbell, who predeceased him in 1993.

The former New Jersey resident was instrumental in establishing the Great Swamp as a National Wildlife Refuge. A charter member of the founding organization, the group later became known as the N.J. Conservation Foundation, in which he was also active.

Survivors include his sister, Lois Dunn of Hillside, N.J.; and two nieces, Jane McCarthy Rosenblum, also of Hillside, and Anne McCarthy Forbes of Acton, Mass.

The family requests that any memorial gifts be made to the Bowdoin College Alumni Fund, 4100 College Station, Brunswick, ME 04011-8432; or to the Boothbay Region Humane Society/Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 45 Montgomery Road, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Marion A. Lewis

Marion A. Lewis, 83, of Boothbay, died Tuesday morning, December 4, at her residence after a long period of failing health.

Born January 19, 1924 in Bohemia, New York, she was the daughter of Tom and Ida McGinnis Bartik, and attended Boothbay Central School.

On November 29, 1941, she married Harlan Lewis and they made their home here in Boothbay. She helped her husband operate his worm packaging business.

Mrs. Lewis was known for her excellent cooking skills and enjoyed making ceramics. Active in town, she was a member of the Missfires of the Boothbay Fire Department, the Boothbay VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and Order of the Eastern Star.

She is predeceased by her sister, Virginia Reed.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Harlan Lewis of Boothbay; two sons, Wendell Lewis and his wife Sheila of Boothbay and David Lewis and his wife Ann of Clovis, Calif.; two daughters, Ruth Michaud and her husband Bob of Naples, and Marie Andrews and her husband Dennis of Boothbay; two sisters, Norma Giles and her husband Irving and Helen Lewis, all of Boothbay; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grand-children.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 6 at the Simmons Harrington and Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay where a celebration of Mrs. Lewis's life will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, December 7. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Lewis's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 170 US Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME. 04105.

Kenneth G. Sampson

Kenneth Gray Sampson passed away peacefully from complications of kidney failure on Monday, Nov. 26, in Gainesville, Florida.

He was born on February 28, 1931 in South Paris, attended school in Harrison and graduated from South Paris High School in 1949.

In 1949 he entered the Navy as a musician and entertained the troops during the Korean War with the naval band, both playing piano and conducting.

After leaving the Navy, he spent four years in N.Y.C. playing with various jazz groups until he joined the Air Force's Airmen of Note band in 1957 and toured with them until 1961.

Mr. Sampson then began a 20- year musical career in Las Vegas, Nevada, playing behind the big names, such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Ann Margaret until 1981 when he moved back to his home state of Maine.

He spent 20 years in Wiscasset working as the piano player for the Muddy Rudder Restaurant on Route 1 and then finally retired to sunny Florida in 2003.

Survivors include his two children, Holly Owen, of Gainesville, Fla. and Matthew Sampson of Wiscasset, one brother, Frank Samp-son of Harrison; a sister, Barbara Matolay of Pensacola, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

It was Mr. Sampson's wish that no formal funeral services be held on his behalf and no memorial contributions are necessary. Family will gather at his gravesite in Harrison, in the coming spring to say their final farewells.

Robert J. Westbye Sr.

Robert John Westbye Sr., 74, of Dresden, died Friday, November 30.

Born on November 14, 1933 in Staten Island, N.Y. he was the son of John W. and Hildur Westbye.

In 1955 he graduated from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He served his country in the United States Army from 1955 until he was honorably discharged in 1957.

In 1966 he married Marilyn J. (Cokefair) Westbye.

Mr. Westbye later graduated from West Virginia, School of Law, in Morgantown, West Virginia in 1960 with a Conferred Doctorate of Law Degree. He was a partner in the law firm of Weber, Muth & Weber, Esqs. In Ramsey, New Jersey from 1960 to 1980, he was a municipal court judge for the borough of Montvale, N.J., he had a private law practice in Point Pleasant, New Jersey from 1980 to 1984 until he and his family moved to Maine. He worked at Bath Iron Works as a Contract Specialist of the DDG 51 guided missile destroyer from 1986 to 1987, he was a Maine Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker from 1987 to 1990, and he co-owned, with his wife Marilyn, Sunshine House Cleaning Service from 1990 to 2005.

Mr. Westbye was admitted to practice before the following courts: United States Supreme Court, New Jersey Supreme Court, Supreme Court of Appeals in West Virginia, Monongalia County Circuit Court of Appeals, West Virginia, Federal District Court of New Jersey, and Federal District Court of West Virginia.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, trapper and bird watcher.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn of Dresden, one son, Robert Jr. and his girlfriend Jessica Labrecque of Auburn; a daughter, Meredith Keene and her husband Timothy of Topsham; one sister in Vermont; a brother in Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be on Friday, December 7 at the First Baptist Church, Middle Road in Woolwich at 3 p.m.
