YMCA Coastal Club
Robert E. Zimmerli
The Coastal Club was called to order by President June Hathaway on
Tuesday, November 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the YMCA with a very good
attendance. Viv Daniels led members in some good singing and after several
announcements led us in the pledge to the flag.
Bob Zimmerli subbing for Chaplain Mary Jo presented a brief but
interesting presentation on Accents. He said the idea came to him after
several trips this past summer to London, France, and twice to the
Baltimore area - all the accents were different. Bob born and raised in
Washington, D.C. said that as a young boy, his father's relatives were
from Flushing, Long Island and they like to hear that Yankee Boy talk. He
gave several humorous illustrations of various accents saying the people
in Baltimore "drink their Cokes in Steerform cups, wash their dishes in
the zink, and the streets are payed with asfault. He concluded with the
passage in the Bible where at a trial of Jesus, Peter denied three times
that he knew Jesus, but a maiden called him on it and said "Your Accent
Betrays You." Bob said we need to know the importance of what and how we
may say something.
June then introduced our speaker of the day, Barbara Bloomgrean from
LifeLine screening who gave a very informative and interesting
presentation on health - dealing especially with the possibility of
strokes and aneurysm.
Strokes are the No. 3 killer in the U.S. Strokes are similar to heart
attacks, but they are in arteries other than in the heart, and cuts off
blood to the brain. She urges each one to have examinations at frequent
times, watch one's diet and exercise regularly. It was a most informative
presentation.
Well folks, we only have one more meeting until the first of the year.
That first meeting will be on Tuesday, January 8 with Alina Blakesley who
will bring a great time of her special music. The final meeting this year
will be our Christmas luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the YMCA with a great
turkey luncheon and entertainment by Donald Duncan. The price is $12; make
reservations at the YMCA.
