YMCA Coastal Club
Robert E. Zimmerli
Members knew just as soon as President June Hathaway called the Coastal
Club to order on Tuesday, November 13 at 10:30 a.m. that it was going to
be another great day, for we knew what the program was to be. Following
greetings and always time to share concerns of members, Viv Daniels led us
in singing several songs.
After the pledge to the flag, Bob Zimmerli "subbing" for Chaplain Mary
Jo, and it being only a day or two since Veterans Day, gave a brief
background of its beginning. The holiday was first proclaimed Armistice
Day by President Woodrow Wilson as the Armistice of World War I was signed
at the end of the war; the 11
th
day of the 11
th
month at 11 a.m. It was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans
of all wars.
According to all available figures, there is only one veteran from
World War I still alive, and figures also indicate that World War II
veterans are dying every day.
He concluded his message with the reading of a very popular poem of
World War I - "In Flanders Field" - and almost all present remembered that
poem as they used to recite it in school.
Following the usual openings, it was time for the program that members
knew was going to be just great! And it was, because Mary Miller had most
of the cast of the high school's production "On Broadway" (which by this
time has already played at the school; hope you saw it). The students
performed and sang many selections from Broadway plays including
"Edelweiss," "The Sound of Music, "Cellophane" (from "Chicago") "I know
Where I've Been," "You Can't Stop the Beat," and several others. What
great talent we have here, and how great to have such wonderful teachers
to bring out the talent of these young people.
Our fall and winter are fast coming to a close, so once again we invite
you to come join us for these last few programs until the Christmas break.
November 20 - Pastor Lisa Burger will talk about Thanksgiving. Nov. 27 -
"Life Line" and will deal with strokes. December 4 - another great musical
talent, Alina Blakesley; and the Christmas Luncheon on December 11.
Come join us for these times of information, inspiration and
fellowship.
