The Boothbay Register - Online Edition

Nov 08, 2007 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 130, Number 45

Saving Money and Energy

Barbara Johnson

Something new has been added to the shelves of the Boothbay Region Food Pantry where once a month clients from Edgecomb, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Southport seek aid in feeding their households.

The Lincoln County Democratic Committee delivered energy-saving light bulbs earned through a series of sales at events over the summer. For every bulb they sold, the Democrats earned three free ones to give to those whose low income made no allowance for such a purchase.

Rep. Bruce MacDonald, who assisted with the delivery of the bulbs, said, "Significant savings on electricity costs can engender $40 over the years. This project is the kind of thing we try to do to make life easier for people."

The food pantry is a remarkable community coalition of area churches, founded in 1985. Located in the basement of the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, the board of directors and staff are all volunteers. They offer a three- and four-day food supply once a month, augmented with vouchers for perishable foods at Hannaford stores. The special light bulbs will be distributed to those needing to replace ones in their homes.

The pantry staff was pleased with the county Democrats' donation. They noted how grateful they are to receive contributions from a variety of sources: school groups, individuals, postal workers, local businesses and the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn. They are presently readying holiday dinner baskets. Emergency help can be had by calling 633-4757. The pantry is open every Friday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
