On Wednesday, September 19, about 60 people arrived at the Community Center to attend our "Evening of History" Potluck Supper featuring Barbara Rumsey as our guest speaker. Barbara was extremely informative offering us lots of information about Hodgdon Island, several bridges (when they were built, etc.) and many other interesting facts about this area. As usual, our Barters Island chefs lived up to their expectations and provided delicious food for the crowd. Thanks to Jane and Ron Spofford for hosting this event and a special thank you to Barbara Rumsey for taking the time to come and speak to us. We truly appreciated it.
President, Evelyn Shahan, spoke about all of our fall season upcoming events, which will begin on Wednesday, October 17, with a Halloween Costume Party (costumes optional). This will be a Potluck Supper so bring your appetizer, main dish, salad or dessert and come join us for a fun, ghoulish, scary evening. Last year the costumes were fantastic and very creative. I don't know what we can do for an encore, but, knowing this Barters Island group, I'm sure they will exceed all expectations.
If you don't have the time to come up with a costume, don't let this keep you away. Not everybody will be wearing them. Arrival time for devils, witches, ghouls, and goblins and everybody else will be at 6 p.m. Let's have a great turnout as this is a really fun party.
You know all those antiques up in your attic or down in your cellar that you've been wondering about? Well, on Wednesday, November 14, at 6 p.m., you will be able to find out the value of those items. John Bottero from the Nobleboro Antique Exchange will be attending our Potluck Supper on that night. After supper, he will appraise items for a small fee of $3 per item (which will go to the Community Center). Just bring your appetizer, salad, main dish or dessert to share and come get those items appraised. You will not only find out the value, you will also be helping the Community Center.
If anyone does not want to attend the supper, you can come between 7:30 and 8 p.m. to have your items appraised.
On Sunday, December 16, at 2 p.m., we will be having our annual Christmas Workshop. This year we will be making arrangements. Any- one who is interested is invited to attend.
Definitely mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 19, at 6 p.m. for our Annual Barters Island Christmas Party. It will be the treat of the officers and trustees as we will be providing all of the food and doing all of the cooking.
One more thing - After much discussion, we will finally be putting together a Barters Island Cookbook. If anyone has favorite recipes to submit, please send them to Lorraine Hodgdon at P.O. Box 41, Trevett, ME 04571. We need your help to make this happen. Please submit as many recipes as you like.
