Ocean Point
Maryellen Bertrand
It was another extremely busy week here at the Point with plenty of activities and lots of visitors to our area. Unfortunately all but two of the activities are over.
Monday, August 20 Sue Anderson will conduct the last of the kids' arts and crafts and on Sunday (and I can't believe I'm writing about September) of Labor Day weekend, Pete Ripley is organizing a mixed golf scramble at Boothbay Country Club beginning at noon. The sign up sheet is located at the Casino and you can either put a team together or Pete will put one together for you. It should be a great time, so don't miss out!
On Saturday, August 18 a memorial service was held at the Wilson Chapel for Margaret Whitehouse. It was a very touching service with beautiful music and scripture readings and a wonderful tribute to one of Ocean Point's great ladies. The following day, a celebration of Jean Adams' life was held at the family home. Jean, like Margaret, was a kind, caring and gentle lady. Ocean Point will certainly miss them both. Maxie Maltais' service was held earlier in the week and was also a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man. Jim Brown spoke at the service and revealed so many wonderful stories about Maxie.
The Annual Meeting took place on Saturday the 18th and was well attended, Thank you to those who provided dessert and to Judy Dawson for the set up before and clean up after the meeting. The slate of officers was presented and voted on by the membership as was the two new board members and the members of the Nominating Committee. They are as follows: President - Charlie Pohl, Vice President - Joan Fischer, Secretary - Robert Dana and Treasurer - Denise Griffen.
The two new Board Members are Lanny Whitehouse and Maryellen Bertrand and the members of the Nominating Committee are Georgia Chambers, Sue Kern and Dave Demers. All reports from the various committees were presented and accepted and just a few minor issues were discussed. Interestingly enough when Dave Demers got up to give his report he began with an exciting adventure that he had earlier in the day with son Devon and Chris Webber. Just 12 miles south of the Point they caught a 190 lb. tuna! They managed to bring the tuna back to the dock and transport it to their house by way of their tractor. Everyone is now enjoying fresh tuna.
The Clamshell Open was played on Sunday the 19th and Pete Dawson claims it was very exciting. Joe Shea was the winner of the tournament with low net and his 10-year- old brother, Ryan, finished second. Garry Boyd was first low gross and John Grachen was second low gross. Longest drive went to Garry Boyd on the 8th hole and closest to the pin on seven was Pete Hamblett and on 17, Gerard Shea, Congratulations to all! Sunday Softball found the Rush Team defeating the Libby Team. We hope to get in at least two more games before the end of the season, so please come up to play.
Recent visitors to the Point include Martha DeGrande's son Robert, daughter-in-law, Eunice, their son Michael and his friend Ziele from Charlotte, Vt. Martha continues to 'hold court' on her front lawn daily and engages passersby as well as her neighbors in lively discussions and many, many laughs. Thank you, Martha for being the wonderful person you are and for allowing Frank to stay the entire summer!
Betsy Klein is reported to be recovering nicely from knee surgery and will be back at the Point soon. Peter Klein received his 'care package' for his unit and is most grateful to all who contributed.
I was asked by Scoop, who is a member of the Chapel Committee, to remind everyone that the last service of the summer will be held on Sunday, August 26 at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Judith Blanchard, Chaplain at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, will conduct the service. Harpist Molly Hahn will perform as well.
Also, Sue Clark has hand-painted note cards available for sale at the frame shop in the mini-mall next to the movie theatre as well as the General Store. They are beautiful scenes of various locations around the Point and they would make a great Christmas gift or just a reminder of how many spectacular locations there are at Ocean Point.
Paula Laverty's Book Silk Stocking Mats is also available for sale and they are located at Sherman's Book Store. Her book follows the story of hooked rugs which were created by the Grenfelled Mission. It is quite an interesting read and another great Christmas gift as well. The Card Cove Association will be raffling an original painting by Ocean Point artist Donald Demers so please support this worthwhile endeavor. It is amazing how many incredibly talented people are living here within our small community. Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
Despite the fact that summer is coming to an end, there is still time to catch some terrific sunsets and enjoy a few more lobster feasts. Have a great week! |
