McKown-Juniper Point

Helene Barnes

On Friday morning most of the residents at the end of Juniper Point did not need an alarm clock as they were awakened by a loud voice from a lobster boat shouting, 'A BOAT IS SINKING! A BOAT IS SINKING!' David Peterson and our house guest from England, Ray Rochester rushed to the rescue and hauled the boat to the dock and were able to successfully bail it before it headed toward 'Davy Jones locker.' Apparently the near disaster was due to a clogged bilge pump and was easily remedied much to the relief of its owner, Jamie Golden.

The Barnes spent six full days last week trying to show our visitors from Yorkshire everything we could about the State of Maine and our area in particular. It was their first visit to New England and they really needed to stay at least another week to get a proper dose. They did experience a picnic at Hendrick's Head, a visit the to Owls Head Transportation Museum, a whale-watching trip, a boat ride up the river to lunch at Sarah's, a visit to Barter's Island, a visit to the Botanical Garden, the Aquarium, and their first introduction to L.L. Bean's along with a major shopping trip at Freeport. They even devoured their first ever lobster and I think they are ready to come back and try another.

Several ladies of the Point enjoyed a lovely luncheon last Monday at the home of Martha Grossi. The guest of honor was Kay Matthew. She was transported from St. Andrews Village. It was wonderful to be able to visit with her. She seemed to enjoy the occasion as much as all the other eight guests. I am told she happily welcomes visitors to see her at St. Andrews as well.

Last week Bunny Gagne's house guest was Burt Grose from West Virginia. His claim to fame is that he is the creator of 'Mr. Rabbit.' Burt had a visit to Burnt Island and felt it was the highlight of his time in the region. Those of you who have not yet explored it and experienced the taste of the '50s that they offer have a treat to look forward to. But hurry as their season is over at the end of August. Incidentally 'Mr. Rabbit's" latest acquisition is a spray of flowers in his hat and a surf board. Still no clue who his benefactor is.

The Barnes clan is off to Texas this weekend for a family wedding.

All news items (hopefully there will be some) should go to Ann Dooley before Sunday night 8/26. The next week will be covered by Jane Stevenson. Keep in touch!!
