The Boothbay Register - Online Edition

May 24, 2007 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 130, Number 21

Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

Scotty

A small but intimate group of BHYC members gathered around the hors d'oeuvre table last Thursday night for the first in-house cocktail party of the season. Our Naples, Fla. contingent was well represented and it can be reported that all are happy to be here. Phil Brooks was there with cane, just two days after knee surgery. How about that for dedication!

The following is from the Commodore:

"Louise would like to call folks' attention to the fact that Commissioning and Commodore Reception fall on different dates this year. Historical Year Commissioning is June 3 rd at 1700 and Commodore's Reception is the following Saturday. All members are invited to attend the commissioning but are counseled that the social hour and dinner which follows is by invitation only for the honorees and officers. Invitations for the Commodore's Reception are in the mail and should have been received by all members"

The new POS system - ALOHA - was installed on Monday and will be ready to use when the club opens. New membership cards with magnetic information strips will be issued to all members and we are expected to carry them whenever we make charges at the club.

And there is good news for our posteriors! For those occasions when we need extra seating, the old folding wooden chairs have been replaced. We now have white resin based chairs with a padded seat - 30 in all.

There has long been a concern about our ability to administer first aid at the club. Our Commodore requested and has received funds from the finance committee to purchase three first aid kits. They will be placed in the kitchen, the tennis shack and a large industrial kit is now mounted in the casino. In addition, under the counsel of members Dr. John Joseph and Dr. Bill Friedman, we have purchased a classic defibrillator. Dr. Joseph, a professor of emergency medicine at Harvard and an active practioner at Augusta General Hospital, will offer classes in the use of this equipment to staff members as well as to any interested members. The dates and times will be announced.

A meeting has been called for Officers, Directors and Committee Chairmen. The date is this Saturday, May 26, at 0800.

Now let's turn our attention to the sign up sheet. The first event to utilize "THE SHEET" is the Dock/ Float Party which convenes on June 30 at 1730 hours. Members will be able to sign up on June 4 until dinner is sold out, which is the norm. The D/F Party is part of the Historical Celebration and will be a salute to over 100 years of boating at the Yacht Club. It will be an opportunity to see up close, some of our club's classic boats and talk to their owners. Another of Joslyn's delicious dinners follows the social time on the floats. Members and their guests are invited to attend whether or not they stay for dinner. You know there will be more about this in future BHYC columns. Because of the Memorial Day weekend, there is an early deadline next week and I would ask all committee chairmen to take heed.

During our travels this past winter I made note of a few boat names. I met a funeral director whose boat is named, "WAKE." A vasectomy surgeon's boat - Nutcracker, and a sign on the inside of the men's room door - "Check your zipper."
