President June Hathaway called the Feb. 13 meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. There were a good number of people present in spite of the cold, blustery weather. Since it was the day before Valentine's Day, our pianist Vivienne Daniels, led us in singing appropriate songs of the day - "As Time Goes By," "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," etc. After the pledge to the flag, Bob Zimmerli (subbing for Mary Jo who was at another meeting and would be present later) gave a presentation on the word "Love." He said that in the English language the word love, according to the dictionary, has 22 different meanings. We say for example, "I love ice cream," or "I love the Ravens," and then tell your sweetheart, "I love you." Many other languages have different words for several aspects of love.
The "Greeks have a word for it." - in fact the Greek language has at least five different words for "love." "Epithumia" is a strong desire of any kind, in the negative sense it is "lust" but in the positive sense it is translated "love" or "desire." "Eros" is obviously erotic love. "Storge" is a comfortable, natural affection and a sense of belonging. "Phileo" is the love of relationship or friendship. Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love, and Philadendron is a "love plant" - the leaves are heart shaped. And probably the highest form of love is "Agape" - all encompassing care - probably the 13 th Chapter of 1 st Corinthians sums it all up.
After some routine business, and concerns for our members and friends, Bob Zimmerli introduced Mary Miller and Dominic Garvey. Mary is the music teacher at the high school and has directed the students in many plays over the past few years. She is also the choir director and organist at Southport United Methodist Church. What many did not know (but they do now), she has a beautiful voice.
Dominic Garvey is the organist at Boothbay Harbor United Methodist church and is well known for his productions at the Carousel Theatre and his entertaining around town. And again, since this was a Valentine party, they presented many love songs from several Broadway productions over the years, such as "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" and many more.
After a great round of applause when they finished they joined the rest of the group for lunch which included a Valentine cake. It was another great time at Coastal Club.
Some upcoming programs are (this past Tuesday - Tina Tucker from New Hope for Women); Feb. 27, Robert Walker with Spotlight on Opera; March 6, Robert Gilbert, Super Constellation; and there will be more about this, Senior Appreciation day at the Y will be held on March 24. |
