Learn about southern cooking with Livvy Dinsmore
There are still some places available for Livvy Dinsmore's southern
cooking demonstration Monday, February 12, in the Home Economics Room at
Boothbay Region Elementary School. The demonstration, scheduled for 7
p.m., is part of the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's 2007 One Book: One
Community program which is featuring the classic novel "To Kill a
Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Livvy, an expert cook who lives in East
Boothbay, will be preparing some traditional southern dishes as well as
providing samples of other foods, some of which were mentioned in the
novel. Those wishing to attend this event should pre-register by calling
the library at 633-3112 in advance of the February 12 date.
Livvy, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, went to school in
Atlanta, Georgia. She worked for the State Farm Insurance Company and
lived in several different states before settling in Sarasota Springs, New
York. Livvy first learned to cook, after her marriage, from a home
economics teacher friend in Florida, and says that in another life she
would come back as a pastry chef. Those of us who have sampled her
Christmas cookies at the library know she has the talent to do so.
Other upcoming events for the One Book: One Community project include
dramatic readings from "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Boothbay Region High
School students on Monday, February 25 at 7 p.m. at the library; showings
of the classic movie based on the novel at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12, at
the Opera House and on Sunday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at the library; and a
"Taste of the South" featuring southern beverages and canapés at the
Townsend Avenue Coffee House and Wine Bar on Monday, March 26 from 5:30 to
7 p.m. Copies of the rules for the One Book: One Community writing contest
are available at the front desk at the library.
