An attempt is being made to contact the families of all the 343 Maine
soldiers that were either POW/MIA/KIA. Anyone knowing of someone who lost
a husband, father, or son in Vietnam is asked to contact Linwood Green,
359 Lakewood Road, Madison, ME 04950. Phone number is 474-0544; e-mail
address is legtag@beeline-online.net; Web site is www.bair
net.org/organizations/vva.
The plan is to scan pictures of each soldier, sailor or marine from
baby until they died in Vietnam. The pictures will be put to music and
make a PowerPoint presentation for the families at no cost.
A highlight of the Legion's recent Mid-Winter Conference was a surprise
visit by Congressman Mike Michaud. He gave an update on the latest
happenings in Washington, D.C. pertaining to veterans.
U.S. Representative Michaud was unanimously elected as chairman of the
Veterans Affairs Committee which has jurisdiction over veterans'
hospitals, medical care and treatment of veterans this past week. He has
vowed to continue to work with veterans, the Department of Veterans
Affairs and his congressional colleagues to fulfill the nation's promises
to veterans and their families.
The Department of Maine headquarters office in Waterville is looking
for a Legionnaire to work part-time for approximately 18 hours a week.
This individual must have a background in or able to be trained in the
following areas: public relations, conference, programs and other duties
as assigned by the Department Adjutant. This will be a salaried position
with a range of $200-$230 weekly. Anyone interested should send a letter
stating background, qualifications and desire to hold the position to
Department of Maine, P.O. Box 900, Waterville, ME 04903, Attn. Ron
Sailor.
The details of the American Legion Dirigo Boys Sate program have been
finalized. The dates for this year's program are June 16-21, 2007.
Graduation will be on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. rather than Friday
morning, as in the past. The program will be held at Thomas College in
Waterville. Anyone who would like more information on the program should
contact Headquarters at the address in the previous paragraph. A check-out
of the program is available on the Web site www.mainelegion.org.
Last week's article on the Healing Field project of the Sons of the
American Legion, Detachment of Maine reported the target date of Memorial
Day. The correct date is Veteran's Day.
To clarify how the Maine Department classifies membership - Members who
have not renewed by January 1 becomes delinquent; those not paid by
February 1 are suspended.
Charles E. Sherman Jr., Post #36, American Legion's buffet breakfast on
Sunday, January 28 was poorly attended. The next breakfast is scheduled
for February 11.
Legionnaire John Druce reports that the latest issue of Gourmet Food
Magazine states that a forgotten Maine seafood dish, Finnan Haddie, is
making a comeback. Legionnaire Earl Brown's famous "Finnan Haddie" is
served at Post #36's breakfast approximately every six weeks. In fact, it
is on the menu for the February 11 breakfast. Come and enjoy a
"treat."
Taps has sounded for yet another World War II veteran, Legionnaire
Robert Irvine, a Post #36 member though he lived in Winthrop. Post #36
extends its sympathy to his family members.
District 7, the old Lincoln County, has a meeting scheduled for
February 11 at 2 p.m. in the Damariscotta Post #42 meeting hall. All
Legionnaires are welcomed to attend. |
