The Boothbay Register - Online Edition

Sep 21, 2006 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 129, Number 38

Monthly metal bidding begins in October at Transfer Station

Lisa Kristoff

The Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District board received a letter from Wallace Brewer requesting exclusive picking rights of the non-ferrous metals in the metal pile (copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel) behind the station office. He offered a flat monthly fee or 40 percent of the monies received from a junkyard.

The board voted to offer picking from the pile to the highest bidder, every second Tuesday, rather than enter into an exclusive rights situation. Closed bids will be accepted until noon. This is an attempt by the board to make the metals available to anyone who may want it.

All agreed to award the heating account to Downeast Energy. The $4,300 package included the office and cashier's shed, main office and employees' office in the recycling center.

Asphalt paving at the facility will begin at a cost not to exceed $35,500 - the bid received by King & Sons Paving.

"I'm for getting this done," said chairman Mike Leighton. "This is one more thing on our list to turn this into a full, functional site."

The new building is being used and the front doors will be installed soon.

The new Operations Manual was reviewed and minor changes and additions were made. The board will vote to approve at the October 12 meeting.

Manager Steve Lewis is to write a letter to all commercial companies regarding the implementation of a nominal clean-up fee to be charged to any company dropping debris anywhere other than the containers intended for it. This is to begin on October 1, 2006.

The second and final sticker survey of 2006 was completed between August 19 and September 4. The survey results indicate what towns are using the facility, in-season and off-season, and help ensure all vehicles have a sticker.

The dates for the 2007 surveys are January 15-20 and July 16-21.

Hours of Operation

The fall and winter hours of operation are now in effect. The facility is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
