Dec 08, 2005 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 128, Number 48

Channel 13 Anchors' "Trading Spaces" Episode Debuts December 10

The Learning Channel's (TLC) popular home renovation show, "Trading Spaces," featuring Channel 13 news anchors John Hopperstad and his wife, Carrie - a former Boothbay Harbor resident - and Vivian Bean and her husband, Matt Curran will air Saturday night, December 10 at 9 p.m. The show will also be re-broadcast on Dec. 11 at midnight and noon and Dec. 16 at 4 p.m.

The local (Boothbay region) TLC channel on Adelphia cable is channel 62.

In Trading Spaces, two sets of neighbors redecorate one room in each other's home. The teams have no say over what happens in their own homes, but they are able to give input into the home they are redecorating.

"We began watching the show five years ago," said Carrie. "Vivian and her husband would come over to our house and watch it. It became a weekly ritual."

Carrie said that in September, she had seen where the show's producers were looking for couples to participate. She said she had mentioned it to her husband and later filled out a form from the show's Web site. The next day she got a telephone call.

"I didn't expect that we'd get picked but they called us," said Carrie, who added that she was a bit hesitant about telling John. "Vivian was real excited."

The next day, said Carrie, "We had a phone conference with all of us. And the next week, they came and did some taped interviews. Within a couple of months, the whole thing was finished. It was a lot of fun."

Carrie said that each couple got to pick three rooms that they would like to be remodeled.

"None of us knew what to expect although there were information leaks during the taping which added to the mystery of the outcome," said Carrie.

She said that after the show debuts, Amy Sinclair of Channel 13 will be doing a news spot on her co-workers next week.

Both couples live in the Deering area of Portland. The Hopperstads have two boys, Nate, 3, and Kai, 20 months. Vivian and Matt don't have children.
