A very successful football season for the Seahawks came to
an end
Saturday as the Lisbon Greyhounds gained momentum early and
cruised to a
36-0 victory in the Western Maine Class C title game.
The host Greyhounds used their premier running back Levi
Ervin to
establish the running game right out of the shoot. After
Boothbay punted
on their first possession, Lisbon started at midfield and were
in the end
zone just three plays later as Ervin broke off runs of seven,
37, and
finally another seven yards for the first touchdown of the day
just over
two minutes into the contest. Ervin also added the two-point
conversion
with his fourth carry.
Again unable to gain a first down, the Seahawks were forced
to punt
again giving the Greyhounds their second opportunity with great
field
position.
However, the Seahawk defense responded and forced a Lisbon
punt as
Blake Krukiel tackled Ervin for a five-yard loss on third
down.
With their third opportunity, the Seahawks were able to move
the ball
as they picked up a pair of first downs but then were faced
with a crucial fourth down situation at midfield. Opting to try
and pick
up the first down with a pass, the Seahawks turned the ball over
on downs
as the pass fell incomplete.
Keeping the ball on the ground, Lisbon moved the ball inside
the
Boothbay 40-yard line setting up a 38-yard
touchdown run by Dan Willis to put the hosts on top 16-0
following the
two-point conversion.
The Greyhounds would score twice more before the break
including a
26-yard touchdown pass to Ervin as time expired on the clock to
push the
lead to 30-0.
With another season in the books, the Seahawks can look back
at a very
rewarding season.
"It was a great season. We went well above
expectations," said Coach Tim Rice. "But we knew as a group we
could be
very good and the kids deserve a lot of credit as they worked
hard as a
group to reach certain goals. To have a winning season and then
reach the
play-offs is what they set for goals and anything above that was
a
plus."
With a final record of 7-4 and a play-off victory under their
belt,
this group really came together.
"The kids played well together, really liked each other and
just got
better as a team. We are just really proud of our kids." said
Rice.
Some of the factors that contributed to the success,
according to their
coach, "The play of the line improved, and as the backs got
healthy and
adjusted to their roles it all started to come together. And
then we added
a more extensive passing game to our package to help make the
offense more
productive.
"As a group, players, coaches and the whole staff, we really
appreciate
the support the whole community has given us this season. We
have high
expectations for next season and that includes the kids
themselves as it
is important for them to look forward to reaching a goal,"
concluded
Rice.
