Ocean Point
Pat Waldman
I have wonderful news. Twin sons, named Jonathan George and Luke Mace,
were born on November 8 to George and Ginna Yerrall.
Congratulations to the proud parents and family, which include Grandma
Nancy Yerrell, our long- time Ocean Point columnist. The folks who saw
George at Martin Turpie's service said he was ecstatic! As well as being a
delight to family and friends, children are our most valuable natural
resource. That's why this new playground project is such an important
effort. Just count the new noses on Sunday mornings.
The news of Martin's death came to me after I had written my last
column, and we got thinking about our teenage summers here. We were
thoroughly immersed in summer fun together. Martin and Alison Turpie, Ted
and Holly Fuller, Lukie and Peter Smith, Haynes and Marjory Hussey, Marcia
and Roger Knauff; the Stevens, Flynt, Figgins and Earle sisters; the King,
Foster and Dawson brothers; and the
Yerralls, John Waldman, Jim Duncan, John Ludwig, Bob Stover, Peter Van
Aken, Dick Noble, Dick Vose, David Libby, Bruce Lewis, Franny Clark,
Barbara Crockett, Gail Ross, and Avery Hunt. I know there were many others
who shared these moments too. Please send excerpts of those carefree
summers to share with Katie and her family and the rascals involved.
Martin and Katie also have had wonderful neighbors and friends during
their marriage here at Ocean Point. Holly and Larry Horner just told me
that Ocean Pointers arrived en masse to pay well-deserved tribute to our
beloved friend.
With the
lovely mild weather lately, my husband John and Link Brown initiated a
two-member golfing tradition for Veterans Day, a sneaky way to extend the
season and get their buddies to join them next year! Link and Julie have
front yard seats for the exciting renovations of the Klein and Fischer
cottages.
Maria Poore had a brush with a deer at dusk that ran into her car, so
be vigilant when you come down for the evening view. Thankfully, we have
heard no nearby gunshots this year and Maria was not injured in the
encounter. Carlton and Joan Plummer are year-round residents now. I'm sure
they will enjoy the other seasons here too.
Jean and John Webster took care of their grandchildren in St. Louis
while Kim and Michael were in Italy. Jean and John had great fun, and were
dubbed "Soccer Grandparents" for the after-school activities! They were
treated by the Heises to highlights in Chicago, including a play at the
Steppenwolf Theatre and great restaurants.
Sunday on Ocean Point, an animated group of people from four
generations strolled along in the sunshine, with four diverse breeds of
dogs, a skateboard, a new bike with training wheels, and a 1960 vintage
faded red wooden wagon propelling the younger members along.
We were celebrating the birthdays of John Waldman and our grandson Adam
Read, who just returned from an AF tour of duty in Italy. What better way
to enjoy the day!
