YMCA Coastal Club
Robert Zimmerli
Peggy Stover, president of the Coastal Club, called the
November 8
meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. She
welcomed visitors and guests, but what an opening! Along with
the usual
members, there were over 70 people present, many of whom came to
hear the
presentation of the new Medicare program by Rick Powis and
Patrice Carter.
(More on that later.) Members joined in singing several
patriotic songs
led by Viv Daniels.
Bob Zimmerli pinch-hitting for Mary Jo, gave a brief
meditation
reminding members that Veterans' Day was on Friday and that
Thanksgiving
was just a couple of weeks away. He said we have many things to
be
thankful for -- and the early settlers of our country, in spite
of
terrible trials, paused to pray and also give thanks -- leading
to our
"Thanksgiving."
Michelle Farnham of the "Y" addressed the group to remind
them of the
many activities the "Y" has for seniors. She also had prepared a
table of
"goodies" of cookies, candy, cake and drinks -- which was well
utilized by
those in attendance.
Patrice and Rick did a presentation of the upcoming Medicare
drug
program. They did a wonderful job of presenting the most
difficult,
confusing, convoluted program that the Government has ever come
up with
(even that is an understatement). For instance -- as a starter,
there are
16 companies that will have 44 different plans under the new
program.
I will not even attempt to try to interpret all that went on
at the
meeting. I don't know how the speakers did such a remarkable
presentation
with such a difficult situation. Rick did give us two things to
remember:
1. A new word -- TANSTAAFL -- There ain't no such thing as a
free lunch.
2. Read the Medicare booklet that was sent to each person who is
eligible
to have Medicare. Write or call your insurance company or
Medicare for
information. You have until May 1 to sign up -- but don't wait
too long.
After thanking Rite Aid and Waltz Pharmacy for their support of
this
program, there was a thunderous round of applause and a standing
ovation
for the two presenters. We then adjourned for lunch (and
goodies) while
many tarried to talk with the presenters.
I keep reporting of the interesting and informative programs
members
have each Tuesday -- this was one of them. On November 22, Maine
State
Trooper Pat Hood will present a program "Protect Your Identity."
You won't
want to miss this one.
