Seahawks Advance With A Victory Over Jay
Keith Alley
The 2005 Seahawk football team has continued to improve every
week as is evident in their fourth straight victory that has
earned them a chance to play for a regional title on Saturday.
The 22-14 victory at Jay Friday night avenged an earlier loss to
the Tigers and marks the second time in three years the Seahawks
have gone to Jay and came home with a play-off victory.
After failing to pick up a first down with their first
possession, the Seahawks forced a Jay fumble on the Tigers’
fourth play from scrimmage.
Starting at the Jay 25-yard line, the Seahawks were faced with a
fourth down situation which they turned into a 23-yard touchdown
pass from Roy Arsenault to Pat Norton. The same two players
hooked up again for the two-point conversion that gave the
visitors an 8-0 lead with 6:27 left in the first period.
The Tigers then responded with an eight-play drive of their own
that produced a 17-yard touchdown pass from Mike Nemi to Nick
Bourassa. On the two-point try, the Tigers were turned away on a
great defensive stop by the Seahawks’ Eric Rego, who has been a
defensive standout all season for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks failed to pick up a first down with their next two
possessions but continued to get a solid job of punting the ball
by Nick Christopher.
Jay appeared to be ready to take the lead as they put together a
solid drive that moved them inside the Boothbay 15-yard line.
But on third and fourth downs, the Seahawk defensive unit came
up with a great effort to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Late in the second period the Tigers gambled on a fourth and
four situation from their own 44-yard line and failed to convert
as a pass fell incomplete.
With good field position, the Seahawks put together a quick
scoring drive as a 12-yard pass to Norton on second down set up
a 32-yard screen pass from Arsenault to Weston Alley for a
touchdown with just 21 seconds remaining in the first half. The
two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Seahawks with a
14-6 lead at the break.
Receiving the ball to start the third period, the Tigers again
moved inside the Boothbay 30-yard line but again the Seahawk
defense stiffened, forcing an incomplete pass on fourth down.
With their first opportunity of the second half, the Seahawks
started to find more success on the ground. The offensive line
of Alex Clark, Ray Powers, Adam Climo, Eric Rego and Ian Ronan,
along with ends Norton and Kris Noonan, were paving the way as
the visitors put together a 13-play drive. Along the way,
Arsenault and Norton hooked up through the air twice more as
Norton caught five catches on the night for 69 yards, while
Arsenault completed eight passes for 158 yards. The drive was
capped with a one-yard touchdown run by Alley, his second score
of the night. Arsenault kept the ball to pick up the two-point
conversion at the right corner of the end zone to give Boothbay
a 22-6 lead with 3:07 to play in the third period.
The Tigers needed points in a hurry as they came back with a
nine-play drive that led to a four-yard touchdown run by Trevor
McCourt, with Ryan Bourassa adding the two-point conversion, to
cut the lead to 22-14.
Needing to take care of the ball and run time off the clock, the
Seahawks did both as they kept the ball for eleven plays. The
play of the game came early in the drive as the Seahawks were
faced with a third down and long from their own 33-yard line.
Failing here to pick up a first down could have led to a huge
change in momentum, but a beautifully set up screen pass to
Alley picked up 42 yards.
Eventually Boothbay turned the ball over on downs as a 15-yard
pass to Noonan came up a yard short.
Starting at their own six-yard line, the Tigers picked up one
first down but any real chances of tying the score evaporated
when the Seahawks Keith Brewer intercepted a Nemi pass.
With 3:37 remaining in the game the Seahawks took over near
midfield and sealed the victory when Arsenault scrambled for a
first down with under a minute to go.
The 9-1 Lisbon Greyhounds will host the 7-3 Seahawks on
Saturday, with the kick-off scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
