Isle Of Springs

Sue Bogart
As promised in last week’s column, here is the skinny on that new islander. It’s a girl! Farrah Sinclair Mackenzie was born on October 29. She tipped the scales at 6 lbs. 5 oz. and was 19-1/4 inches long. Grandmother Patsy says that her fingers and toes are long. Maybe she’ll be a surgeon, a pianist, or a rock climber, who can tell at this point. Just know that Andy and Angela are thrilled as are the Senior Mackenzies. To keep it all in the family she was born on Jen Mackenzie’s husband, Chip Loughridge’s, birthday.

Further news on that tribe is that Jenny and family will be with Patsy and Will for Thanksgiving. Can’t you see it now, those three Loughridge girls cuddling that new little cousin? By now or in a couple of days, Azzie Mackenzie will have the title of Producer of Sports News for ESPN. What good news for one of our island young men. Since the Patriots will be on Monday Night Football tonight, I’ll pay attention to the credits for a change. Congratulations Azzie.

Some of you may not remember that Phylis Webster was born on Halloween and this year was a significant one for her, 90! Her daughter, Judy Underkoffler arranged with Will and Patsy to surprise Phyl for the occasion. Will was in Florida directing "Sweet Charity’’ but Farrah’s birth kept Patsy in California to help the new parents. Once they are on their own, Patsy will join Will at the Golden Apple Theater.

FYI. Hannah Morehouse has changed servers for her e-mail, so strike yahoo and insert earthlink.net.

You all know I read all the fine print in the Register and am very interested in the goings on at the Bigelow Labs. At one time we had three islanders on the board of directors, Cam Niven, Dave Fernald and Dick Morrell. Now Dick has moved into the chairman of the board position, and we send congratulations. This is one of the premier marine labs in the country and an important employer in the region. One of the ballot questions in tomorrow’s election here has to do with job opportunities and if approved will help Bigelow in their move to the property they now own in East Boothbay. This is a big responsibility for Dick as the labs expand. We wish him good luck.

Saturday as I was sitting in the dirt working to winterize my garden, a car pulled into the driveway and Joan Faccenda got out and was talking on her cell phone. She handed it to me and I got to talk to Julianna out in California at photography school. What a surprise. Not only Joanie showing up but the phone conversation. I was mistaken when I told you all that I thought Nick and Lea Aeschliman were the last to close up. The Faccendas had expected to come for the Columbus Day weekend, but decided the weather was just too horrid. Joan had left stuff in the refrigerator for that event, so had to come north to clean out. She arrived at Sawyers with no means of transportation, because Mike was busy on land with the stage that the Rotary Club is building at the Y camp. In talking to him on the phone, he offered the use of his boat, and so she got across and finished in about an hour and a half. Now I think that all the cottages are buttoned up, but I could be proved wrong, again.

Several weeks ago I mentioned that Reenie Tibbetts, young Otis’ wife, had been in town with some historic material for the historical society. I had phoned and had to leave a message. I had just about given up hope of hearing from her when I missed a phone call from her. As I suspected, they had been away, but the bad thing is that while they were gone, Otis’ mother, Edith fell and is now recovering in a nursing facility. An e-mail to Reenie has not produced results. So I do not know how bad the fall was or an address for her, but a card to Reenie at 629 W. Auburn Road, Auburn, ME 04210, would undoubtedly be hand delivered to Edith, for those of you old enough to remember the Tibbetts family.

Halloween was a bust for me. Not one trick or treater. It was the opposite for Edgar who did not have any candy ready, but had many of the monsters and ghouls and had to invade his store of cookies to satisfy them.
