Ocean Point
Pat Waldman
We spent a wonderful family weekend with our daughter Anna and her family. We had the joy of being together and the delightful confusion of the young great-grandchildren and rambunctious family dogs! For those of you who were concerned about our injured grandson, Tyler, his jaw seems to be healing well, but he has lost a great deal of weight as his jaw is wired shut.
At the ballgame, there were so many three and four generational families that Sylvia Schroeder remarked that our young families have assured us an abundant supply of future ballplayers! Marlies Boyd and others enjoyed a refreshing Melonade drink, provided by a young sales team of Hambletts and Fullers. All three of the Browns' adult sons were there, Bob, Barry, and Bill (Binkie)! Bob told me he has been selected by FEDEX management to receive the coveted humanitarian award in Memphis in October for his compassionate and effective rescue of the elderly lady last winter, as related in a previous column.
Pete and Suzie Hamblett were given a Surprise 45th Anniversary at the Casino. Pete Collins played. Family and friends celebrated that milestone event!
After their holiday in Asia, Spencer, Susan and Ernie Whitehouse have enjoyed hosting Japanese student Yugin Shirota from Shinagawa, Japan, a borough of Tokoyo and long-time sister city to Portland, Maine. A total of 16 students came this year on the exchange program and journeyed to Ocean Point with their host families for a lunch of crab and lobster rolls at the Whitehouse cottage "Rockmere," followed by swimming off the new dock. Three Ocean Point young people -- Brendan Bennett, Kelsey Bennett and Caroline Bourassa capably served as goodwill ambassadors during the Japanese teens' visit to Ocean Point.
On July 24, a beautiful day, the Ocean Point 5K was run at 9 a.m. Close to 100 runners took part in the race and prizes were awarded to each age category winner. The top finishers in the men's category were: first place, Matt Carter of Boothbay Harbor with a time of 17:37; second place, Michael Howland of Damariscotta with a time of 18:04; third place, Ocean Point's Charlie Pohl with a time of 18:11. On the women's side, the winners were: first place, Alison Wade of Amherst, Mass., with a time of 20:10; second place, Chrissy Meagher of West Roxbury, Mass., with a time of 20:33; third place, Angie Beal of Winthrop, with a time of 21:15. All results will be posted on http://www.coolrunning.com.
Special thanks go to Race Director Jim Rush along with Charlie Pohl and Joe Clark Jr., who helped organize the race and the volunteers, Lisa Rush, Jim and Ginny Rush, Mark, Flor and Alex Rush, Maryellen and Willy Bertrand, Peter Meagher Sr., Mike Meagher, Lois Meagher, Mike Meagher Jr., and Bob Slayton. Thanks to the Ocean Point Inn who sponsored the race and the Rush family, Bertrand family, Meagher family, George and Ginna Yerrall, and Peter Klein family who were also sponsors. Thanks as well to all the local businesses who donated prizes for the runners and to Tom McGonegal Jr. for our shirt design.
The results of the last few baseball games are as follows: On July 17 in the Slayton vs. Bertrand game, an outstanding catch by Joe Shea and a heroic homerun by Jay Bennett set the pace, while a come-back victory was clinched by a spectacular catch by David Houston in the very last play! The score was 7-6. On July 24 a Bertrand team come-back was thwarted by a grand slam homer by Jason Plummer. The score was 15-6. On July 31 outstanding defensive actions were highlighted by two spectacular catches in left field by Ben Ford, and flawless pitching and terrific base running by Peter Dawson. Nye Hornor's team beat Andy Hamblett's team 7-0. Sounds like a rematch will be exciting to watch! About 50 players from 8 to 80 enjoyed the lively July 29 Capture the Flag night. Our dedicated junior tennis team has played matches versus Squirrel Island and the BBH Yacht Club in July, with more matches in August. Members of the team are Joe Shea, Jake Fischer, Betsy and Caroline Bourassa, Will Rush, Chelsea Stevens, Spencer Whitehouse, and Abby Clark. Hannah Laverty is the assistant coach. Please pick up the updated schedule of events for August from Bob at the Casino. There will be a pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 6; and a fundraiser for Safe Passage, an educational program for the impoverished children in Guatemala who live on the edge of the municipal dump will be on Sunday evening, August 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. It will be a silent dessert auction. It is sponsored by some of our young teenagers that went there this spring and who will relate their experiences.
On Monday evening, August 8, there will be a piano concert at the Casino. Don't forget to sign up for the Annual Clamshell Open Golf Tournament with Peter Dawson or Bob Slayton, to be held on Saturday, August 20. You are encouraged to sign up complete teams, but any combo will be accepted.
The Ocean Point Cookbook called "More Than A Cookbook" is being reprinted and will be available in early August. Those who wish to reserve one or more copies may pick up an order form at the Casino bulletin board, fill it out and turn it in to either Bob at the Casino or bring to Coco Webber's or Marilyn Heise's cottages. Cost is $14.95 each. We will be selling them first to OPers, then to shops and stores in town. A limited supply is available.
All these events are made possible by the efforts of volunteer workers who deserve a sound round of appreciation!
