Fine Interiors Marks 20 Years Of Business
Kristoffer Roveillo
Today, Fine Interiors features three floors of home accessories
and enough comfy couches to sleep a small army, but rewind 20
years and you find a one-room interior design business.
Go back a little further and you can trace its roots all the way
back to Ginny and Bob Spurgins' living room at their former
Fullerton Street home.
Ah, what a difference two decades can make.
"It was just something that we wanted to do," said Ginny on
starting the business. "We never intended that 20 years later
we'd still be this happy. I don't have a single regret."
The business opened in July 1985, occupying one room of the
former schoolhouse on Atlantic Avenue.
Then the focus was on simple interior design: upholstery,
drapery, slip covers.
But it became apparent early on that the community needed more.
"We found there were more and more things that we needed to go
out of town for," said Ginny. "People were asking us to put
their whole houses together. Our business grew so much over the
years."
In 1992, the Spurgins purchased their Rt. 27 facility and have
since moved their design operation there.
Today, the Fine Interiors Furniture Gallery inventory occupies
every inch of its home. From bath towels to lamps, to garden
furniture and drinking glasses, it appears all home design
tastes are satisfied.
The expansion has been fueled by a growth in clientele, some
from across the country at that. Consider the customer from
Georgia who ordered cabinets made in her native state from Fine
Interiors, or the out-of-state remodeling for homeowners in
Florida and New Jersey that called on the Spurgins for design
work.
"That gives us so much praise," said Ginny. "It's a very
satisfying business that way. You get to meet so many
interesting people."
And then there are the boats.
The Spurgins twice re-upholstered the 83-foot, Hodgdon
Yachts-built Yorel, and also have the 124-foot Antonisa in their
portfolio.
In 1999 the business took on a family flair when the couple's
son, Matthew, joined the ranks after graduating from Boothbay
Region High School.
"We have a great business," said Ginny. "We have never been
happier."
So what's the future look like?
"We'll take it a day at a time," she said.
Just like the first 20 years.
