The Boothbay Register - Online Edition

Aug 04, 2005 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 128, Number 30

Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

Shades of the 1950s! Untold memories were brought back last Saturday night with the extraordinary Sock Hop staged by Bonnie and Dick Stevenson. It started with the classic car parked at the top of the hill and continued with the spectacular decorations in the Casino including the rotating mirrored ball and classic posters. The food was great and the music brought back a whole set of images long lost. Trivia competition between tables got heated at times and the Blakes and the Maces won the twist contact. Penny Thumith was the winner of trivia answers. If you missed this event, and many did, you picked the wrong night to stay home. Thanks Bonnie for a great job.

Now news of a slight calendar change. The Junior Awards Banquet originally scheduled for the evening of August 14 (Sunday) has been moved to 11:30 a.m. that same day. Seems as if a number of our best junior sailors will be competing at Blue Hill the next morning.

This means that we can have Sunday Supper after all, so add that back to your night of available Sunday gatherings which has become a tradition not to be missed! August 14, we will serve!

Fleet Captain Tony Oneill reports we have 17 boats signed up to date for the August cruise starting this Friday. I expect 20+ by Friday. They are Yankee Pedler, Blue Whale, Adagio, Marjorie B, Sunshine, Falicitas, Coaster, Fancy Free, Figment, Skyward, Bromos, Fiesta, Loon, Cordelia, Midsummer Dream, Caseys and Cynara II.

Last Thursday night's cocktail party, hosted by the Men of the BHYC, was a sell-out. Well over 100 people came, and at the end of the evening, they all left. A 24-month swim suit calendar, the Men of the BHYC, is now in the active discussion stage as a follow-on venture. Tonight, August 4, will feature appetizers from the "BHYC Ladies Tennis" group, Claudia and Megan, to name a few. These ladies had their usual observations and questions about the men's appetizers last week - the meatballs were oval not round, that's the worst centerpiece I have ever seen, we prefer our sausages medium rare, and how come the chips were served in a can?

So a "Battle of the Sexes" has been launched to determine once and for all who are the better hosts or hostesses for the cocktail parties . . . the Men of the BHYC or the Tennis Ladies?

The Tennis Ladies were overheard planning their menu, tea and tofu, lemonade and lettuce, spring water and watercress sandwiches and a centerpiece made of lace and silk. If the Tennis Ladies carry through with this menu the men are threatening to buy appetizers direct from Jocelyn. A line has been drawn in the sand that can never be erased.

It probably makes sense to come to the Cocktail Party tonight and see who wins this epic battle, and who sleeps on the couch.

Let's look at the calendar -- This weekend is the Tennis Tournament start and the cruise is out. Monday and Tuesday we welcome a visit from the Corinthians who are making BHYC the featured stop on their summer cruise. Chaired by our member Alice Mutch the event will conclude with the Corinthians joining our Tuesday night cocktail hour and sharing the evening with us. The Corinthians are a worldwide boating organization and we are honored to have them select BHYC for their visit.

Following close on the heals of that visit is the last appearance for the summer by Danny Beal, on Wednesday night, August 10, with his world famous piano and song routine. Sign up now as the evening is a sure sellout. Piano music from 6 to 8 p.m. and song and banter in the lounge following dinner.

Here is a late flash from the sports desk which is simply one corner of the news desk, a very small corner. The results of last Sunday's Commodes Cup race (second in the series): Cruising class: first, Nipantuck, Mark Werner; second, Growl Tiger, Winston Kipp; third, Momentum, Lee Krow.

In the Racing class: first, Ghost, Ken Colburn. The J22 class: first, Quest, Cindi Watson; and in the BH One Design, first, Fraulein, Debbie Swan. Congratulations to all the winners and losers, it was great to see you on the water.

Please think ahead and save the night of August 27 for our Gala Caribbean Evening complete with steel band and island food. Speaking of food the lunches are great and Sarah reports that we have room for you!
