Looking forward, Friday, September 2 marks the 60th anniversary of World War II's end. All church and community bells in Maine will be asked to ring from 1 to 2 p.m. as they did 60 years ago. At 1 p.m., WW II veterans will form at the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor and ride into town where they will parade a half-mile section of the route traveled by Maine National Guard troops through downtown Bangor to the old railroad station where they shipped off for training for WW II in early 1941.
After the parade, the veterans will return to the museum for a 2:30 p.m. band concert by Maine's 195th Army National Guard Band including a USO-type show. Major prizes and drawings for the veterans will take place. Featured speaker will be Maine's U.S. Senator Susan Collins, who will be introduced by her dad, Donald, a WW II combat Purple Heart veteran. Following the concert, an ice cream social will be held and free rides in WW II vehicles will be offered to all veterans and their families. All veterans and the public are invited to participate.
In the August issue of Reader's Digest, page 22, there is an article and some pictures of the Bangor Troop Greeters meeting the military troops returning through the Bangor airport.
Sick call shows no change in the location of Dick Dill and Bob Larsen. Visits, cards and prayers are still welcomed. There is an addition to the list. Brud Pierce fell and now has a broken arm according to reports. | |
