Time to check the springtime events. The summer water will be
turned on Friday, the 15th!
Also on Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. the community is invited to
enjoy a Pot Luck Supper at the Southport United Methodist
Church. Those who have contributed recipes for the upcoming
United Methodist Women's Cookbook are encouraged to bring a dish
using that recipe. Names beginning with A to H bring dessert, I
to P bring salad and Q to Z bring a main dish. The Townsend
Family of Jefferson will provide musical entertainment.
Then on Tuesday, April 19 Jean Hawley and Roger Roche,
representing the Friends of the Southport Library, team up to
give a presentation to the Coastal Club at the YMCA. The program
is: "A Peek at the Past, A Forecast for the Future." Jean will
give the historical view and Roger has the plans for the
renovations and expansion for the Southport Library.
Wait there's more. The Southport Island Association has some
dates to note. Plan to help with the Annual Island Clean-up on
Sunday, May 1. Meet at the Southport school at 1 o'clock for an
"assigned area." Sunday, June 26th is Bolster Day, to be held at
the Southport Yacht Club from 5 to 7 p.m. A morning coffee is
scheduled at the Hendricks's Hill Museum on Tuesday, July 12 at
9:30 a.m. Remember the SIA continues to support many of the
island's needs, from the school programs, the library, Southport
Fire Dept., also YMCA Summer Camp, Y-Arts, St. Andrews Hospital,
Boothbay Student Aid and the Boothbay Ambulance Fund to name a
few.
We will fill you in on more information as the dates come up.
Janet and Dwight Eames were delighted to hear about their son
John's romantic proposal to Heather Whitlock. John and Heather,
who are from Half Moon Bay, California became engaged among an
"once-in-a-lifetime event," that happened in Death Valley this
month. Beautiful flowers were in bloom, a rare happening for
this dry and desolate area.
People on the go include Barbara and Jack Bauman have returned
from their travels to Virginia, with a stop in Cape May, N.J.
for a 42nd Wedding Anniversary celebration. Another stop was in
Churchville, Penn. the Memorial Service of Barbara's mother,
Marguerite Baker.
Sally Giantris is back from Albania, where her husband Philip
and daughter Arian work. Arian has a job with USAid as a policy
advisor for the anti-trafficking of women and children.
What is there about being a grandparent especially the first
time? We've got "grandparents galore" at Sarah and Doug Wolf's
as they share the joy of newborn grandson, David. Daughter Mary
and new "Dad" Andrea welcomed Andrea's mother, Netta Cigliola
from Taranto, Italy.
The Southport General Store will open a new dining area on
April 15. Stop in, get your coffee and paper and then have lunch
or dinner. Check out the great new menu with specialty
sandwiches (today's was the turkey bacon club wrap), and then
the desserts include the apple pizza pie, the best chocolate
fudge cake, pound cake and lots more.
Anita Sherman tells me that the mooring "bills" will be out
next week and are due by May 1. Southport has 470 moorings in
and around the many coves.
Linda Brewer reports that the ospreys have returned to Cozy
(and Cosy) Harbor a week early. She mentioned that daughter
Jessica is taking a camping vacation on the Baja Peninsula
snorkeling with sea lions, (sounds warm and wonderful).
That's it for this week; send any news for the column to Leal
Brinegar, writing for the next three weeks.
