No Suspect In Sign Thefts
Robin Beck
A front-page article about Boothbay selectmen in last week's paper contained erroneous information about missing Boothbay road signs which were recently found in Boothbay Harbor. To correct the record Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Steve Clark explains that a local unnamed father did not "turn in" his son and the son "was never a suspect" in the case of the stolen signs. "We had a visit from a dad," says Chief Clark. "His son had found a pile of signs, 30-35, maybe more, dumped in a remote location on a dirt road in the woods. The vast majority were Boothbay street signs, and there was some damage done to them." The son had brought one home to show his father, who relayed the message to the police about the discovery. Patrolman Rich Mirabile acted on the report and, after finding the missing signs, loaded them in a truck and turned them over to the town of Boothbay's Public Works Department. "We have no information on who dropped them there," says Chief Clark about the signs, adding that the thefts will likely be investigated by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office since they occurred in Boothbay. "The kid was never a suspect," says Clark, "he was doing the right thing [by reporting his find]." The newspaper regrets any confusion created by publication of information which had been misinterpreted by Boothbay officials.
