Girls' Tennis Loses Western Class C Quarterfinals Match To Freeport
Desiree Scorcia
The Boothbay Region girls' tennis team capped off an outstanding 11-1 season on Wednesday with a narrow defeat at Freeport. The girls played exceedingly well against a tough opponent, said coach Audrey Curtis, losing the three-hour match 3-2. "The girls had an incredible season," said Curtis. "They narrowly missed being undefeated all season, and came equally close to beating Freeport on Wednesday." Stephanie Branch won her first singles match against Emily Hoering, 6-7, (7-3), 6-1, and Kaitlin Garrett was defeated at second singles by Mallory Smith, 6-2, 6-1. Third singles player Julia Irish lost a very close match to Katherine Hoering after two equally close tie-breakers. Her final match score was 5-7, 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5). "Julia should be very proud of the way she played that match," said Curtis. "She had a tough opponent, and she played beautifully." Boothbay's first doubles partners Audry Hodgdon and Emily Moore lost to Freeport's Mary Hudson and Grace Montgomery 6-2, 6-2. Hillary Hyson and Sarah Sherman played second doubles and defeated their opponents Muldoon and Lewis 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. "I want to thank the girls for their hard work during a wonderful season," said Curtis. "I'm very proud of them."
