Mutiny On The Bounty: The True Story
On Tuesday, May 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Community Auditorium at the
Boothbay Region High School, the Boothbay Region Adult and Community
Education Program is hosting Bounty historian Raymond J.
Maloney.
Maloney has had a lifelong love affair with the epic adventure of the
Bounty. As a boy, he devoured the Nordhoff and Hall novels, built
several models of the Bounty, and saw the Charles Laughton/Captain
Bligh film many times. Growing up near the water led him to a lifetime of
sailing. Duty as a combat fighter pilot and postwar overseas tours,
followed by a career in aerospace international marketing, made Maloney a
world traveler.
Now returned to his first love, Maloney is involved in research for a
book
on the Bounty epic. His search has led him to libraries and museums
from England to Australia and to the South Pacific islands of Bounty
fame.
Connecticut newspapers have published feature articles on his work
which
have led to numerous lectures, including the Mystic Seaport
"Adventure Series" and guest lectures on South Pacific cruise
ships. Maloney has also been a guest on radio and television, and appeared
in and was technical consultant for an A&E channel documentary film on
the Bounty story.
As historian and sailor, he has crewed many times on the Bounty
replica. The American Neptune, a maritime history quarterly, published
his work on pinpointing the location of the mutiny itself.
Maloney's immense slide collection of the people and places of the
Bounty story and his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm make his
presentations truly memorable.
Maloney is a member of the Pitcairn Island Study Group and the National
Maritime Historical Society.
Prior to his business career, Maloney served eight years in the Air
Force
and has 3,800 flying hours.
Maloney is a graduate of Yale University and the Cambridge Institute
for
Business Management. Born in New York City, he now resides in Milford,
Connecticut.
