May 09, 2002 "Serving The Communities of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb" Vol 125, Number 17

American Legion Post #36

Bill English

In order to give Legionnaires the opportunity to attend the school budget meeting on Monday, May 13, the Legion meeting has been rescheduled to Wednesday, May 15. As usual, supper will be at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting to follow at 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, May 12, Mother's Day, the opportunity exists to treat mothers to a great breakfast. The Legion is hosting another of its popular buffet breakfasts on that day. Hours are 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The menu includes choice of eggs, French toast, bacon/sausage, home fries (made from scratch), O.J. and beverage. Come and enjoy!

There will be a meeting of the Memorial Day Ceremony Committee at the VFW hall on May 10 at 4:30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering or have suggestions, feel free to attend.

On May 24, 10 a.m., there will be a dedication at the Gray-New Gloucester High School Athletic Field. The dedication of a memorial and flagpole in honor of Commander Robert A. Schlegel, USN, who was killed at the Pentagon on 9-11. To get there, if interested, take Route 26 out of Gray village toward Poland Springs, turn left about two miles out of the village at a sign saying Gray-New Gloucester High.

University of New England Health Care and VA Medical Office Center invites Legionnaires to a dedication ceremony for the new clinic facility at 635 Main Street in Saco. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 24 at 2 p.m. and will be followed by an open house and refreshments. Contact Jim Simpson at 623-5714 for more information about the event.

The Department of Maine Public Relations Committee is conducting a statewide 50/50 raffle for our organization. The Department Finance Committee and the Department Executive Committee recently approved the raffle. Its purpose is to generate funds for the Department for unexpected expenses, which are not covered by the yearly budget. Hopefully, the winner will be receiving well over $1,000 depending on ticket sales. The drawing will be held at the Department Convention in June. If anyone wants any tickets to sell, please contact Past Department Commander Bud Colby at 563-3009. Proceeds from sales should be sent to the Department of Maine, P.O. Box 900, Waterville, ME 04903.

Voiture Locales No. 763, 40/8, is hosting a Grand Cheminot at the Wells-Hussey Post #42 in Damariscotta on Saturday, May 11. A preliminary meeting, scheduled for 11 a.m., will be at the local Railway Village, at the French 40/8 railroad car. Action will then move to Damariscotta for a meal. This will then be followed by the Cheminot at 2 p.m.

On the lighter side -- if you think there's too much government nowadays, just think what it would be like of we got as much as we pay for.
