"Loaves and Fishes" Sponsors Weekly Breakfast
Robin Beck
Local dentist Dr. Doug Bevins and his wife Theresa, along with several volunteers, have begun a project called Loaves and Fishes, a weekly free breakfast for members of the community. The Bevinses raised money through a garage sale this past summer, obtained donations of funding, food and restaurant equipment, and assembled a crew of volunteers to run the breakfasts which began Tuesday, Oct. 16. The hot breakfasts will be offered every Tuesday morning from 7:00-8:30 in the basement of the Boothbay Baptist Church. On the menu are eggs, bacon or sausage, pancakes or French toast, muffins, bagels, breads, applesauce, yogurt, fruit, coffee, tea and juice. Fourteen were served the first week in a friendly and relaxed setting garnished with flowers and colorful table decor. Shop 'n Save donated food for the first breakfast, and the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club has donated $1,000 for the project. Vans pick up residents at the Pines Apartments at 7:00, at Bay Landing at 7:15, and at the School Street Apartments after that. The weekly breakfast is offered as an ecumenical outreach to local folks to sponsor a spirit of community and fellowship. Senior citizens, single parents with kids, and anyone facing difficulty or loneliness are especially invited and encouraged to come. The meal is free, with optional donations always appreciated. Loaves and Fishes welcomes volunteers and is looking for the donation of a refrigerator. For more information or to volunteer, call Theresa Bevins, 633-4844. |
