Coastal Club
Jeannette Hidasi
What better way to spend a beautiful fall morning than to attend the weekly meeting of the Coastal Club. On October 9, President Dick Zollo began the meeting by circulating a card to be given to the family of Elaine Spitzner at her memorial service. Lois Seaman, who is planning a Halloween party for October 30, sent around a sign-up sheet for bringing a funny hat, a carved or painted pumpkin, wearing a costume, writing a Halloween poem or telling a scary story. Those not wishing to be active participants were encouraged to "just come and enjoy." Prizes will be given and there will be a cake. Chaplain Mary Jo Zimmerli read a meditation entitled "Where was God when all this happened on September 11th?" The program for the day was a concert by George Range, organist and choir director at the Congregational Church in town. We learned that he was not a music major in college but an English major who taught English for 13 years before joining the corporate world in New York as a "head hunter." He finally found his way to Boothbay Harbor four years ago. George is an accomplished pianist who enjoys playing by ear. He started out by taking piano lessons at age seven. He played some familiar standard tunes and also took requests from the audience. We were treated to such tunes as: "Night and Day," "I Love Paris," "Closer to Thee," "Unforgettable," and "Somewhere My Love." The music was concluded by our singing "God Bless America." We thank George for a most enjoyable concert. The October 23 meeting will feature Joyce and Don Duncan who will present a program entitled "Malta -- Cultural Crossroads." The club meets every Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the YMCA. All are welcome. |
