American Legion Charles E. Sherman Jr., Post #36

Bill English

The regular scheduled meeting of Post #36 was held on Monday, October 8 at the Post hall. Twenty-two Legionnaires and 12 Auxiliaries enjoyed a boiled dinner prepared by Master Chef (and finance officer) Harry Pinkham. He was assisted by Lew Curtis, Don Wheeler, Robbie Robinson and Bob Nicol. The formal meeting followed the supper at 7:30 p.m. Key items covered were:

--Discussion of status of the planned December 7 affair to honor all veterans. The aim is to have an attendance of 200.

Ted Seith is to be the guest speaker. Local Coast Guard is to be Honor Guard. There will be a guest soloist.

--Chances were sold on a candy basket made by Toat Fossett, proceeds to go towards the cart for Togus, a program of the 3rd District American Legion.

--The Post thanks Gardiner Savings of Waterville for a donation to support a Girls or Boys State attendee.

--To prepare for the December 7 event, Post meeting schedules have been changed to the third Monday in October, first and third Monday in November at 7 p.m. There will be no supper. All Legionnaires are urged to attend and help with the preparations.

October membership renewal notices are in the mail. Latest figures show that the Post is a fraction of a percent under 55 percent. Legionnaires are asked to send in their dues now to help make the Adjutant and Assistant Adjutants' task easier.

Duane Ferrante, a member of Post #36, is being checked out to become a bus driver at Togus. When the paper work is finished, he and Palmer Paine will represent 40 percent of the certified drivers.

Lincoln County American Legion meeting was held on Wednesday, October 3. Three main items were discussed:

--Plans are being formulated to have a coordinated bottle drive with all Posts in the county participating. The objective is to raise at least $250 per Post, $1,000 for the county, towards the purchase of the cart for Togus.

--Veterans are experiencing delays at Togus because of the lack of personnel due to lack of funds. All Legionnaires are asked to write their Congressmen and Senators urging more funds for the Veterans Administration.

--Damariscotta Post is planning a Veterans Day dinner for November 11 at 1 p.m. All Legionnaires are invited to attend.

Emblem sales are restocking their flag and flag supplies. For more information you can call them at 1-888-453-4466, toll free.

There was activity at the Post on Saturday morning, October 13. Since the Post's Flag Burning Chairman Joe Conte is laid up, the flag disposal ceremony was on a quiet basis this year. Service officer Bob McCartney and John Druce took care of properly disposing old flags. At the same time, a crew of Bob Thornton, Art DeSantis, Steve Rumery and Bill English got the hall set up for the breakfast scheduled for the next day.

The Post thanks Bob Nicol and his crew for manning the Legion's table at the Fall Festival selling raffle tickets.

The buffet breakfast on Sunday, October 14 was another success. Ninety adults and three children were our guests. The next breakfast will be on October 28. Plan to be there.

A Legion cap has been found at the Post. It has five stars, devoting over 25 years of membership, plus a Post commander's pin. The owner can contact Adjutant Sherman to reclaim it.

Know anyone who could use a good breakfast? The "Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen" welcomes all those in need to breakfast on Tuesdays, 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Boothbay Baptist Fellowship Hall.
