Isle Of Springs

Sue Bogart
We have a newly affirmed Anglophile on the island. Kate Ayer, who will turn 15 in June, has just returned from a trip to England to play soccer, football, over there. She was part of a select team that went over to play some English teams, and they acquitted themselves well, considering that most of them have not touched a soccer ball since last fall. Kate and another player were housed with a family named Garlick with three daughters, one of whom played soccer. This family really showed the girls as much of London as possible in the short time they were there. Kate did a lot of tube (subway) riding and reported them to be far superior to NYC or Boston. She was exposed to fish and chips. Didn't much like the fish, but the chips were good. They attended a soccer game and played in three, one of which the U.S. team tied, and two were lost, but not by much. This was as much a cultural exchange as anything else. Riding double-decker buses all over the place they got to see Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guards. Then to Madame Tussaud's and riding up and down Oxford Street, but not to Harrod's as that was out of the way. I'll bet her Mom and Dad were grateful for that. They had a tour of Wembley Stadium, even the locker rooms, and one of the highlights was a tour of Hampton Court, where they viewed Medieval games, and toured with head sets, which negated the need for a guide. She was treated to a performance of ``Grease'' at the Cambridge Theater, as well as a trip to Warwick Castle, where they could walk the parapets and see for miles. At Stratford-on-Avon, she learned the genesis of the term ``rat's nest'' but did not reveal it to me. Kate termed ``pub'' food good, and enjoyed a ``Fry-up'' where everything you eat is fried. Tough on the arteries! Her two-page letter to me ended with this revealing PS. ``If you ever don't know what to give me at Christmas or my birthday, a plane ticket to England would be nice.'' She joins her other grandmother, Peg Ayer in this English appreciation. Thanks loads for the letter, Kate.

The island is open, up and running. First resident, Edgar Reed, moved over on Friday, to be followed closely by Susan and Rob Reece on Saturday. Joan Faccenda arrived on Sunday, courtesy of the ERTC, and Bruce and Nan Bogart and daughters boated across that afternoon also. I watched Mike assist the Stricklers, Tom and Linda, launch the little green boat that was the Willeys. The Reeces were expecting to meet Evan for a meal, but were planning to leave quite early since they wanted to be in a good spot to cheer Duncan on as he planned to run the Boston Marathon today. I remember many years ago a former superintendent of the island ran this race, but I think this is the first ``islander'' to attempt this feat. We wish him a good race, and wonder if he'll see either Scott or Dina Hutchinson near the starting line, as they live in Hopkinton, the starting place.

I ran into Susan Bean in the supermarket, and her plans for the school vacation concerning checking in with all the New Hampshire relatives. Scott has to work, so she's traveling alone. They had been over to the neighboring state for the Easter holiday, where they celebrated by going ``out'' for dinner. What a treat for the usual cook!

Eleanor Morrell called last night with the exciting news that granddaughter Jessie Polackwich has been accepted at Harvard Law School. She had heard affirmatively from several other places, but was holding out for Harvard, and it was the last one she heard from. Jess and her mom, Debbie, had been in Brunswick during the Easter festivities, which also included the celebration of a significant birthday for Eleanor. The Jim Morrell family is currently in Florida ``doing'' the theme parks, and new baby, Isadora Osgood, plus Mom, Dad and stepbrother, Elliot, are now in Williamsburg, Virginia where Chris Osgood has family, that they will be able to introduce Isadora to. It's also a great time of year to show Colonial Williamsburg off to great advantage to Elliot.

I can hardly wait to get my first peek at the island tomorrow.
